Spices That Heal: A Cozy Blend with Big Benefits

Flat lay of assorted spices including cinnamon, turmeric, and star anise on a dark surface.

I know I’m a bit late to the Pumpkin Pie Spice game this year, but I had to mix up another batch last week for a special pie I was asked to make.  It made me realize that I should share how I make my own blend.  I think it is one of my favorite blends because the aroma is comforting, and I know there are some great health benefits too.  Spices can also be medicinal.

So why is my blend so different?  I could just buy the stuff at the Co-Op (and I have at times)  But we all have our own way to make things and due to the influence of my mother-in-law I add cardamom to this blend for an extra touch of something nice.  But it in itself is a medicinal powerhouse. It is anti-inflammatory, aids in digestion, blood sugar support, improves circulation, clears congestion, and can help with anxiety among a whole host of other things. The other spices in the blend are all powerhouses, too, so don’t think twice about adding it in.  It is delicious and it is good for you in a number of ways.

Linda’s Norwegian Comfort Spice Blend

  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg (use freshly grated for maximum potency!)
  • 1½ teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cloves (whole cloves, freshly ground, are ideal)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cardamom (my secret twist for a richer taste!)

Mix and store in an airtight jar. Don’t forget that as you enjoy this blend know you are getting some powerful health benefits, too.

3 Easy Ways to Use Pumpkin Pie Spice

Pro Tips for Maximum Health Benefits

  • Cinnamon: Opt for Ceylon cinnamon (“true” cinnamon) for glucose support.
  • Nutmeg, Cloves, and Allspice: Use whole spices and grind fresh for potent flavors and nutrients. When buying pre-ground, buy smaller amounts so it doesn’t go stale in the pantry
